dos & don’ts: Shaping an album campaign

Building an album campaign is a craft of its own. PR expert Philo Oppenhäuser shared with us what works — and what doesn’t. Here's a sneak peek at what's inside the Initiative Pop.

Our educator Philo Oppenhäuser, founder of the PR agency ANGER MANAGEMENT in Hamburg and an expert in the European music business, has given us his perspective on how to approach an album campaign. His main point: timing and storytelling are everything.

Too often artists underestimate the amount of preparation needed and rush into releasing an album without building momentum. That usually means great music goes unnoticed.

Instead, a carefully designed rollout — with singles, visuals, and a clear narrative that unfolds over time — allows fans, press, and partners to engage on a deeper level. An album campaign should be understood as a long conversation with your audience, not a one-day announcement.

Philo’s Dos & Don’ts

❌ Don’t rush the release — “done” doesn’t mean “ready.”

❌ Don’t drop everything at once — stagger the rollout.

❌ Don’t announce without a plan — avoid hype with no follow-up.

❌ Don’t rely only on one platform (Instagram ≠ entire audience).

❌ Don’t spam DMs or comments — it hurts your image.

❌ Don’t ignore visuals — artwork and branding matter!

❌ Don’t copy-paste press releases everywhere — tailor your approach.

❌ Don’t compare your campaign to others — every artist's journey is different.

❌ Don’t get discouraged by slow starts — momentum builds over time.

✅ Do plan ahead — ideally 3–6 months before release.

✅ Do set realistic goals (streams, press, tour, fan growth).

✅ Do build a timeline: single drops, video releases, pre-orders, etc.

✅ Do tease the project early — behind-the-scenes, snippets, artwork hints.

✅ Do create diverse content — reels, lyric breakdowns, music videos, BTS clips.

✅ Do pitch to playlists (Spotify for Artists, SubmitHub,etc.).

✅ Do update your website and socials to reflect the album era.

✅ Do engage your fans directly — newsletters, DMs, Q&As, listening parties.

✅ Do stay consistent even when engagement fluctuates.

✅ Do celebrate the wins — small or big.

✅ Do track results (streaming data, fan responses, content performance).

✅ Do keep creating — album campaigns end, your artistry doesn’t.
